Memrise was restored

Mine still isn’t working. It keeps giving me the same 10 words to review. I’m up to 94 words to review and the site won’t let me! I used this site every day. So frustrating. I’m afraid to lose my progress. :frowning:

I have the app, and I could use the app, but I DESPISE using the app.

Mems are what make Memrise unique, effective, and better than the alternatives. If I attempt to plant on the app, I am forced to answer incorrectly in order to choose a mem. That is ridiculous. Not only that, but several of my courses have no mems, few mems, or only lame mems. For me, not being able to create my own on the app makes it close to useless for learning.

Reviewing is okay, but I’d much rather type than answer multiple choice. Multiple choice doesn’t confirm that I actually know how to spell the word. (For example: acestă, acesta, această, and aceasta are all words for “this” in Romanian. It’s vital that I practice spelling the correct version, not simply choose the word in the list with an A and EST or EAST.)

This downtime has an upside. It gives me the opportunity to practice lessons in Turkish that I’m not good at, while also earning points. (I’d say, “practice Turkish and Romanian,” but I simply don’t have much Romanian due for watering…)

Yes, I have opted to depend on them because the site worked flawlessly three years ago when I started studying Japanese. By now, I have over 5000 words among my courses, and it’s not like I can just start all over again and find another resource to study from. Yeah, I can study grammar in the meantime and luckily, I don’t need to practice words often because I don’t tend to forget them once I’ve learned them. But that’s not the point, the point is that I don’t want to have over 3000 items for review, because I will need to spend several hours to bring that number down.

Besides, I chose Memrise because it automatically tests words based on how much time has passed and on how hard I find that word. I can’t do that if I read words from a book, for example. The only useful alternative solution would be to export my course database to SQL and create my own application to mimic Memrise’s testing methodology.

Same here, reviews don’t get recorded but I get the points every time. Making things easy for exploiters.

I’m okay with this if they are working on it, things can break and it might take a while to fix them especially with a small team. Memrise has given so much to me, I give them all the time they need to adjust everything, and a big thank you.

The update, bug or whatever is going on for the last 2/3 weeks, having to introduce commas, apostrophes, symbols, alternate definitions to get a review right has ruined the site for me, barely usable, and very frustrating. It’s something I cannot understand or find any logic to if it’s a decision and not a bug or error. Has the staff said something about it?

Removing the courses tab, changing the dashboard which now loads five times slower than a year ago and it’s more disorganized, removing course forums, making the mem system worse, an unchanged premium service for two years, an infantile and tedious app, and in general focusing effort to change things that worked well instead of actually improving anything. The most voted and great ideas on the old suggestions page were ignored. We learned to live with that, but for me this is the icing on the cake.

Please undo.

unfortunately, you’re so right, Kaimi. Add to these the “ostrich strategy” of the team: everytime they make a huge blunder, they hide their heads in the sand…

It’s so frustrating because it just seems so easy to go with the flow, listen to the users, it feels like the staff doesn’t use memrise, who really thinks the rocket app design is efficient? Don’t they find it difficult to find new good courses? Who decided one day that it would be easier to navigate through dozens of finished courses instead of having the ability of pin/unpin from the dashboard? why has the loading time of sessions increased so much? where is the garden, and why did the all the gardening references, a perfect analogy, disappeared? was it so hard to understand the concept of plant/water? what about courses with missing creators? so many questions that no one ever answers… i’m so sad. What has improved? The community and the scripts are the best thing of memrise.

Nothing works on the web app right now. We’re lucky to have so many more resources just two clicks away these days

And I want to share this community https://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/ which is pretty interesting as well as all the related subreddits and language specific subreddits that can help us to connect and learn more.

Sorry for double-posting, but just to let you know - the site works again! At least functionally. The counters are still bugged up, but the actual process works. So, if you have 20 items to review and review 10, the button will still show that you have 20 to review, but it won’t be true, you’ll just have the other 10 left. Similarly, if you learn all the words in a level, you won’t get the flower icon, but the words will be learned, clicking “learn” again won’t lead you to the same words.

Well I have courses with 5 words to review and I can do it over and over. Doesn’t feel like it’s recording anything.

Strange… it works for me on various courses. Maybe it’s only fixed for some people so far? :frowning: Or for some subjects? I’ve only tested it on German courses, I’ll go try something else. But either way, at least it shows that some progress is being made…

Edit: I’ve tried a completely different course (some dinosaurs), but it still works as described for me - so, the counter is unchanged, but I can’t review the same things all over again.

Look at the level page, do those items still show “Due for review: Now”?

Yes, you’re right, I didn’t check the individual levels. The word is not due to now but I can review it as many times as I want.

Anyone else getting the error “there is nothing to learn in this game mode. Please try a different one” when trying to learn new words in the iOS app?

Memrise, please get your act together. The fact that you’ve been down for several days makes me seriously doubt the viability of both your product and your team.

Hmm, that explains why I can’t review certain courses even though the counter hasn’t changed. Interesting.

I’m with you there @Hydroptere, I use the web version almost exclusively. It is becoming increasingly frustrating (and demotivating) to not be able to reduce the number of words one has to review no matter how much time one is putting into Memrise.
@Lien can you please advise when the web version is supposed to be fixed. It has been many days now. Thanks.

Everything appears back to normal, yay! Now we need to get Course pinning, Language grouping, and Loading all courses on the Dashboard at once back and everything would be kosher.

And our lost daily streaks.

I don’t want to continue with my two courses if I don’t have my daily goals, y had one of 229 days.

French 1 and 2 seem to be working ok now for me. I doubt this was an easy thing to fix. Anything to do with software bugs can be fraught with difficulty. Thanks to the Memrise team for their hard work in trying to resolve the problem. We can only be patient when these things happen.
