Good point!

I can see other peoples mems right now, have they reversed it?

but I still cant like

Of course it’s not easy.

I’m just saying there’s no point in threatening to quit if you’re not going to, and that even complaining may achieve little.

So if the point is trying to learn, then stay; if the point is trying to get Memrise to change anything, then perhaps only quitting will achieve that.

Hi @Hydroptere,

Agreed, but I was referring to its original USP - which included a combination of the flower garden analogy with the ability to build our own courses and create shareable mems.

What next, I wonder? Since the flower garden was replaced with ‘space ships, distant planets and enemy agents’ for the purpose of the app, the concept of sowing seeds and growing them into ‘strong flowers in our long term memory’ no longer fits with that scenario and I expect planting seeds and growing flowers will be the next thing to be replaced. What with, though?

Found this on an Internet search today: “A mem is anything that enchants learning,” says Cooke, 30, who splits his time between London and Boston. “Whenever you learn something, you always connect it with something you know. Mems help you make that connection.”

Ironically it was spoken by Ed Cooke, one of the founders of the company that just decided mems were no longer an essential “connection” of the learning process for the users of their program. So is learning less “enchanting” now ?

well, i understand they’ll make the webversion a copy of the app. The app has dark arzheimer colours, lots of noises and planets/rockets (the new logo: “with memrise, you fly nowhere, but you gona get very fast there”). Probably they’ll change then name of the app and kick us out soon (the web-users, course creators, long-term users)

I agree with you DW7 - it was good to browse through and see other’s Mems and often find very good ones to use yourself. I too, was very disappointed when the automatic ones disappeared - but this is even worse when everyone’s disappeared (but your own).

This is bad…better approach was to rank mems based on its usage (and not just like), likes and provide option to flag inappropriate one.

I’m angry! I enjoyed looking at all the mems others created and occasionally creating my own.

Why does Memrise continue to remove features?! I’m doing several courses and I’ve never seen an offensive mem. Is it really that big of a problem? As others have pointed out, it is perfectly possible to add a downvote button or a “report” button to prevent spam!

What feature is Memrise going to remove next? Audio, ability to view/use other community-created courses, or maybe the ability to build courses at all?

Please bring back the mems, they really help me to learn the language (Especially for Japanese and Mandarin) and is the main appeal of using this website.

Oh boy. Did the users request these changes? It’d seem to me that Memrise read our feedback then branch off in another direction and do what they feel like.
As a course creator, I sometimes use mems as information cards. And I believe that these are appreciated by the students. So, now they can’t see them???
Surely an easy-as-pie logical straightforward way to handle unwanted mems is to have a flag where users themselves can pick which mems they want to see?
Also, users may like to see more than one mem.
Also, users may want to see what other newer mems have been created. Etc, etc.

I’m sorry, but this sucks so completely that I have to add my two cents. “You won’t see mems created by fellow learners. You won’t see mems created by course authors.” Are you TRYING to make people leave in droves??? This widespread effort to avoid giving offense to anyone over any possible thing is an absolutely vile trend in western society. I have seen Memrise make some mistakes over the years, but this is the worst. Please reconsider. And if any of those people who are fainting because they see something “offensive” happen to be reading this, why don’t you go find something else to do, and come back when you grow up.

I have used memrise for over a year, I have seen quite a few bad changes. First big change I hated was removing course forums from the course page(now I never read course forums). Now removing mems??? I think this is not a good change, I like using other people’s mems and they help me. Honestly thinking of looking at other SRS sites now.

Though, if they did away with being able to see user-created courses, I’d quit right away. The official courses are a joke compared to the wealth from years we have access to. I tremendously doubt anyone posting in this thread would be left if they did that.
