Is there any way to tell from within the app/course which English it uses?

(Title says it all but it wouldn’t post with this blank)

Hi @Wildsage,

When courses were first created , UK and USA people created courses in “English”.

I believe MemRise has now created clones of their own courses (one for UK English and one for American English).

I have found the “I speak” UK flag “:gb: English” and anther for the USA :us:, so perhaps that’s where you can start.

On courses I support, if some words are in American, I am trying to add the UK English (eg colour as well as color) as alternatives especially when having to type it.

I think both UK and USA languages have access to the same user-created courses.

Great question, WildSage. I was wondering the same thing. Once enrolled in the course, it seems impossible to tell which one you are enrolled in. This is very frustrating because apparently Memrise is making improvements to the Japanese courses for English but not for English (US), primarily with katakana recognition.

As DW7 points out, I think this is only a problem for official Memrise created courses and not user created courses, but I could be wrong.

As feedback to the Memrise developers, looking at the course descriptions and titles below, it is impossible to tell which one is for English and which one is for English (US). Just adding a note in the description seems like it would be an easy fix.

Until Memrise fixes this issue, you can use trial and error of selecting separate courses in the English or English (US) and see which one you haven’t started on. Here’s how change your language: Language Settings (Android); Changing Language in Search (Android); Change Language in Profile for iOS Users; Change My Website Language

In case you haven’t figured it out:
UK English is listed as “English”
USA English is listed as “English (US)”

edit: Sent some of this to the [Site Feedback] message board. Hopefully at least one of these posts gets read by Memrise.

I am aware of the two different courses and how to get them. What I am looking for is a way to tell by the description which is which. For example, I have Danish 1 from both UK and US English and currently I can tell from the words learned. However when I complete both of them there is no way to know the difference without have to open them.

I simply want to know if there is something I’m missing in the courses description or on the screen somewhere without having to go through the lessons to see if they use pants or trousers.

How hard could it be to just stick (US ENGLISH) or (UK ENGLISH) in the description?

Good point. (I guess I have only ever gone into a course to water/ revise them.)

This might be a solution - for there to be an attribute column that displays at tests that says just that (UK English or US English).

I have three version (almost clones) of some of my courses (different ‘versions’ or translation of the Bible) and I have used just that method - although it doesn’t actually matter as there isn’t any typing, it’s more for my convenience (especially when I was creating the course).

PS One could also display the native language as a flag superimposed on the course photo (as the automatic flag would be Danish [the language being learnt] and not the ‘English’ version.).
