Improvements to the Dashboard

Strange, now it’s not working properly inside levels, maybe, I spoke too soon. Inside a level you return to the top of the list after seeing an item. After classic or speed review it’s fine, you remain where you were.

We would like to but things arent always that simple. Releases don’t always include user facing problems. We need to make them more internally comprehensible, they need translations, they need to be linked to the vendors release at a specific time (so they some times delay releases). Prepping ahead of time isnt always possible either as some times you don’t deliver what you wanted on time so…
But yeah, ideally we would like them to be more informative too

Last weekend was bank holiday weekend here in the UK and that meant that our week was a little shorter. The week before we skipped release due to this (week being shorter and us not being able to monitor after release) and last week being shorter we did not make it in time unfortunately.

Thats not ideal, as you have had to live with what we know isnt a great user experience for the course selector for a little longer. As I said a few days ago, we had prepared many fixes for the problems you raised around that but they could not go out due to the reasons above. We have now started rolling the latest update with those fixes (and there are a few more coming) and we hope you can get them in your devices in a couple of days.

Actually, it’s simple.

Post release notes right on this forum in English - with brief description of your inner works and at length about changes affecting users.

Never heard of other web sites posting release notes to forums…

Well, there obviously has been an update. But, again, it really is a change to the worse. NONE of the problems have been fixed.
Instead, you can now hardly see how many words are up for review due to the information being very small and getting lost with all the other info (streak, words learned/to learn, etc.) shown on a single/crowded row.

I do hope that this isn’t the end of the “fixes” to the dashboard and course detail screen …?

Forget it! They will just say that they’ve done it “based on extensive user research”.

Hi Jesus @JBorrego,

I like the improved the App dashboard - particularly the removal of the rubbish bin icons. I was always concerned that accidentally hitting one of those might have caused one of my courses to be deleted.

Hitting the tiny missile symbols appears to launch courses - which can currently be done much more easily by simply hitting course icons. So, for improved functionality, I’d suggest removing the missiles, and increasing the size of the ‘due for revision’ (teapot) numbers.

Just a few thoughts - Regards, Ian.

Reading this I am now very afraid of updating the app… has the update improved since your last message? I saw there was a new one released on the 20th, so after your post.

No, it’s gotten worse instead of better, so I suggest you wait a little longer …

I get confused if we are talking about the App dashboard or the web dashboard.
Could the title be modified, please?

Anyway as the last posts were about the App, could I remind @memrisesupport that I don’t know what the “Home” hand planting icon does?
It doesn’t do anything on my phone and certainly doesn’t take me to what I’d expect (my home page of courses as on the web).

Anyone else know what it does?

I too like the removal of the large icons (now in the three vertical dots option) so we can see the whole course title (which user-created courses use).

PS
I see the rocket is how many days streak I have on a course (ie how many days I’ve been on my mission).

PPS
How does one update the app?
There is no notification and it’s not in the cog wheel settings, so I guess one has to check the store occasionally?

PPPS
How interesting, when I looked at the App store earlier it showed my version as a different number to the App store.

Now the App store says the version is 20th April and my App has indeed been automatically updated. :slightly_smiling_face:

If you were going to go to an eye doctor to know how your eyesight is - in this case the last update is most certainly great and handy. I just hope Memrise won’t charge us for extra services.

Not sure what you refer to, can you elaborate?

If you’re on Android, updates are managed through your Google account resp. the Google Play Store. If you have auto-updates turned on, you’ll receive updates without having to do anything (that’s how I do it).
If auto-updates are off, go to the Play Store, click the hamburger icon and tap “my apps and games” (might differ, my store is in German).
This should take you to the page where you see pending updates.

Moving the number of words to review was an annoying change. I’m all for making tweaks to the design but this one didn’t work. The number is really small and hard to read - the main reason for opening the menu was to see which causes I needed to review and now that’s so much harder. Putting it back on the course photos would be so much better.

DW7 … On the App … I don’t know what the “Home” hand planting icon does?

Olaf … Not sure what you refer to, can you elaborate?

Bottom left.

I think that’s just to move between “Plans” on the right and the “original” screen.

Oh - I see, it takes you back, having been to plans!

But why is it on that page? - Just curious.

And as I said before it’s not like the “Home” on the web, which takes me to a list of all courses I’m learning or revising.

Typical conversation with Memrise staff.

Users: We need more control over dashboard to sort out our courses.
Memrise: Thank you for your feedback! We did a thorough analysis and realised that what you really need is a new dashboard with symbols so tiny and green colour so overwhelming so you won’t see ̶s̶h̶i̶t̶ a thing.
Users looking at new dashboard: WTF?!
Memrise: Ungrateful bastards! We won’t talk to them for another month.

The end.

Well, this is not the way to cultivate a good relationship with Memrise personal. I’m just happy they are here and respond, unlike a year ago – and I want that to continue. I think they are doing a good job with all of us who have zillions of feature we can’t live without.

For starters, would you be so kind to use grey “reply” button, when you are talking to me or anyone else. You’re internet-savvy enough to reply correctly, and it’s not the first time you are doing this.

What’s the use of their presence, if

  • there is still no intelligible dialogue with Memrise; ask any serious question - they would ignore it, as well as they are ignoring the major part of feedback
  • they are still dismantling more than building or making things even worse or changing non-essential things so to change them again three months later
