Important Update: Upcoming changes to Memrise community-created courses

I had already downloaded my courses for offline use.

Today I also went into the Play Store, searched for Memrise, then from the menu unchecked

[√] Enable Auto Update

…which is normally enabled by default.

I’m hoping that this means my app will survive once Memrise starts trying to push out a crippled version in a few weeks.

As to whether it still works after that… I expect the app will encounter an error whenever it tries to report my progress to the central servers, at the end of each exercise. Whether it can smoothly recover from that error, or whether I’ll get an unending stream of popup error messages, I don’t know.

But I’d rather be frozen in time with my community content than forced to use Memrise’s junk content.

I already transferred my stuff to Anki. Not sure how I could transfer them to your future program but I’m sure you guys are going to figure some stuff out. Also, from what I saw, most courses are intact for now.

I recommend this thread for using Memrise with downloaded community courses in offline mode:

I plan on blocking all internet access for Memrise and auto-update is already turned off.

Does anyone know if after a certain period in offline mode, the app insists on “phoning home”??

How do I do this and can I do this for courses that I didn’t make myself?

I found the database which is good

I know that they’re still there now. I worry for those ‘deleted’ courses I learn when that transfer happens. Technically, I’m not even sure if they exist (though they must, because I don’t think they store data locally (I use web-only)).

And yes, I was aware you’d moved everything to Anki. You were rather vocal about it yesterday, lol : ) It’s a good solution if you know how to best use it, but you shouldn’t have had to do that. Memrise are being difficult for no good reason.

Yes, you can do this for any course on Memrise. This is the version I use https://github.com/wilddom/memrise2anki-extension/tree/anki20
The explanations are a bit complicated, I’m gonna just say what I told a guy on Reddit about it : "Yes, for me they do, but as I said, you first need version 2.0 of Anki (the older one which you can find on their site) . Then go to the github link for memrise2anki and go to the branches tab. And choose the stale branch (“anki20”).

After that, go on Anki, go to Add-ons, “Open add-ons folder” and copy only MemriseCourseImporter.py and the content from Memrise_Course_Importer (not the whole folder). Restart anki and you should see “Import memrise course” when going to Tools. Also, if it gives you an error message, don’t worry. Everything works fine for me, not sure why the error message appears"

You can also add audio, but it’s a bit tricky, you need to know some of Anki’s functions, so bear with me. First, if you study Japanese or Chinese you need 3 fiels (“Front”, “Back” and one for “Kanji”) and 3 cards (Card #1 goes front to back, #2 goes back to front and #3 kanji to front),

If you study any other language, you only need 2 cards (“Front” and “Back” which is the standard). When the importing finishes, you’ll be prompted with what type of deck you want to make, choose “Basic” if you wanna go only front (target language) to back (English) , if you want to go both ways like what Memrise does, choose “Basic (and reverse card)” , which makes a duplicate for every card, but that will prompt you in reverse (so English to target language)

Now for adding the audio, After you choose Basic or whatever, you need to assign stuff. Generally, you’d want to assign “Front” to the target language and “Back” to English and lastly, the third column to the left will say “None” , click on it and choose “Front” and to its right scroll down and look for “Audio” , Lastly it will ask you to assign the cards, if you see English as Front, assign it to Card 2, and you get the idea. Assigning cards doesn’t matter much, just don’t assign everything to the same card.

If you do all this correctly, you should have a fully functional course.

Does this only work on the desktop version of Anki?

Sorry if I sounded too insistent, it was a combination of me being disappointed at Memrise and very excited to use Anki. It feels like having a fresh start with my approach to learning. Also, I admit, I don’t know how to use it that much, but it’s better than the sinking ship that is Memrise. It’s giving me no alternative, because there’s no guarantee that they’ll actually change their mind.

I’m afraid so, yes. But after importing, you’re good to go on any version.

Lol. Didn’t think you were being too insistent. Anki’s pretty complicated for the average user but the pay-off’s pretty decent if you can set it up right. It’s a shame that it’s so isolating, from a learner perspective (I never found a community for it really). But yeah, Memrise will probably sink from our perspective, but they might be relatively successful for other users who don’t even know what it used to be like; almost a clean slate for them, I guess. They probably won’t go under, they just won’t have people like us anymore.

So you could do this on the pc version and when it is finished use it on the mobile app as well?

Yeah. Just be sure to sync your data often. And “Check media” from time to time to see if you don’t have any useless audio files.

I want to use Anki but there’s no multiple choice mode

I take that back. It seems that comments are moderated, so Memrise might actually have asked someone to read through the comments and publish them (more of a controlled shit-storm then ). I can now see comments and receive an email for new ones.

Too bad you can’t export audio. If you have audio in your courses, then that’s pretty much useless, I’m afraid!

That is annoying. Especially if we consider how important audio is to learning.

That’s not the case, I’ve exported a course from Memrise to Anki, complete with the audio files.

There is a multiple choice add-on https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/379383283
I’m not sure how/if it works, haven’t used it myself. But it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out.

Also, yes, you can export the audio, but as I said before, it’s a bit tricky.

I tried it yesterday but when I want to modify a flashcard I’m getting an error because of the add-on.

Can you elaborate? I’ve tried that twice, without success. Maybe it’s that stupid person in front of my monitor!
