Important Update: Upcoming changes to Memrise community-created courses

@cazzandra You’ll be able to continue learning on desktop, that won’t change. But if you want to learn on mobile you’ll need to use a mobile browser in future

Oh well…

after this, how can we trust you that you wont abandon us in the future again? Since it is going to be free what will keep you still funding the hosting of webpages? Commericals, ads? One of the reason I am pro-member is that I felt that it will give you money to keep the things the way they were…

and also I have just cancelled my Pro - subcription and I used to be so proud to be a Pro-member. Sad.

@Philosopha I see what you mean. That would be hard work if you’re working in multiple scripts.

What part of “mobile browser is not an option for memrise customers” you don’t understand??? I don’t use the app I use the website, you know why?? because I can’t afford getting a smartphone. This computer my mother bought it to me before she died. Now imagine the people who cannot afford to get a computer but got a smartphone because is way more cheaper than a computer. Most Memrise users have smartphones. At work, I’m the only one with a computer. Don’t you see the big mistake you are doing???

@neal.p.carey yes I’ll come back in the next 1-2 weeks with a proposal on how to improve this situation on Decks so that trusted users can have ‘contributor status’ on abandoned courses.
@alanh also suggested this

I use a Chrome extension called Google Input Tools, it opens a little on-screen keyboard, if that’s an option for you. It’s kind of annoying to use though, which is why I also much prefer using the app.

Absolutely hate this. I am a lifetime pro member through the crowd funding campaign. This is a complete betrayal. I will no longer be using memrise in any capacity and recommending against its use in the future.

When you say you are going to split the memrise vs community courses, am I going to loose my points? I’ve got 25,000 words and 45,000,000 points. I’m “done” if my word or point count drops. Fortunately my pro renews in April so I have time to see what happens.

Thanks Kevin!

I can’t help but get the feeling that Memrise is committing suicide - slowly, but steadily. Over the ~1.5 years that I have been using (and paying!) for the Pro-version, the app has degraded (no kidding!) in functionality. During this time, I’ve submitted bug reports, wrote many postings regarding bugs here on the forums, only to find out that Memrise just doesn’t seem to care. The switch that is about to happen just seems to be the next step.

This statement is nothing short of plain impertinence. You kill the app, replace it with a “mobile friendly website” and call that a minor change? You can’t be serious.

Now other than most folks posting here I don’t have a PRO-subscroption. Instead I bought a life-time license for €99,99 (~ $110) which should compare to a sub of at least 3-4 years. Will we get our money back, too?
Not that I care much about the money - Memrise is one of my linchpins and you’re taking it away. I know that my posting will probably not be read by anyone from Memrise, but maybe the sheer number of (negative!) postings in this thread might lead to them reconsidering this step.

Hi @NickiFloccaCagle26, I’m afraid we’re not planning on having a mobile app for Decks at the moment. I am sorry about this. We are investing in making the Decks website mobile friendly though

I have been paying for “pro” so that I can have off-line community decks. Since this move takes away features that I paid for (last month!), how can I apply for a refund?

@danielws no you won’t lose your words, points or any other progress. All of that will be transferred to Decks

I want to buy annually-Pro account to study community courses. What should I do NOW ???

I’ve tried several sites to learn languages. With all its problems Memrise is the best, at least for me. This is why I’m complaining, even though what they are doing benefits me, they will commit suicide. This kind of radical decisions have destroyed companies in the past and I fear Memrise will die in 3 years or less. I got a 2 years subscription, which today I decided not to renew, just as a way to support Memrise and having the difficult words feature as a plus since it’s not really necessary. Now I will try to finish the user created courses I started before Decks, or even Memrise, disappear. I cannot understand why they cannot see the big mistake they are doing!! @kevin5284

I’ve been a fan and a user of Memrise since 2014. My partner and I both use Memrise religiously every single day.
My issue with the official memrise courses is how thoroughly piss-poor they are for Japanese. The community have made significantly better courses that I have personally seen worked a thousand times better in educating others in this very difficulty language.

My partner cancelled his subscription this morning; he was only making payment to support the developers. Since Memrise couldn’t care less about supporting the wider community, there is simply no reason to continue to make payment.

Is this move going to be the final nail in the coffin for Memrise?
I certainly believe that there is no coming back from the absolute outrage that has been caused to every single loyal fan and member.

I just knew about my courses removal from app and I want to thank you for the link. I was already thinking about moving to another platform, for Memrise has been disappointing me for some time. It link works! Bye bye, memrise.! Hello, Anki!

Thank you, John

Well done, Memrise.
