I have listed suggestions for how course creators or course contributors can deal with the synonym problem in one of my posts above. But you need someone to actually go into the database and make the changes. If the changes aren’t made, then the frustrations will just continue for ever
Would you be willing to become a course contributor for these courses that contain these frustrating problems, HansWT?
I can testify that finding ways to avoid confusion over so-called synonyms is a great way to exercise the grey matter and it really helps you to understand how words work, too. Being a course contributor for the 8,000+ Most Common Swedish Words courses (it is split into four parts) has been an amazing and fascinating way for me to improve my knowledge of Swedish.
And you are NOT making a problem out of nothing, I truly understand your frustration with so-called synonyms and poor definitions of words. But the only people who can put these things right on the community-created courses are people like you and me who want to improve them and help other people at the same time.
That is the great thing about this platform: it encourages crowd-sourcing and community-based problem-solving.
Just a thought, but I have seen often the use of “adj.” for adjective, “n.” For noun, etc., used in various courses.
Might “syn.” For synonym be used or applied with the word or in the small print below the words.
Maybe such as this… Great (syn. großartig) to prompt for Toll
Or Quite (syn. leise, still) to prompt for Leise?
Keeping it simple & short is needed. I’ve seen some words that have almost 20 words/long sentences/examples written after them to prompt the proper 1 word response.
And yes, I would be happy to be a contributor, editor for courses… although I need to learn how to do such.
This would indeed be one solution!
If a word is really common in a language, then it will most definitely have multiple meanings and usages, and - like a good dictionary - it would be good if the entries on a language vocab course were able to reflect that to a degree. To help people remember words and give them some typical everyday usages, I have often added little phrases or examples after words and that has generally been popular, according to the feedback I have so far received.
The problem is with the app, though, because at some point, there isn’t enough space to show the complete entry on the app when you get six boxes appearing with six different words. The phone screen isn’t big enough to show everything
As a result, I am trying to review “my” courses on my phone as often as possible to get a feeling for the maximum length of a given entry so it can still be seen in full on the app.
To this point, I have stopped doing speed review all together (both app & web UI) running out of time trying to read multiple (up to 8) long answers to find the correct one, then sticks it in Difficult Words requiring even more time to clear it.
If I am understanding the app/Web UI correctly, correct answers during review, do not clear “Difficult Words”
