Hi, @Grahameh! hints are limited to 100. You’ll get them when you review (from the blue button). It is really easy to get that 100.
It needs to be confirmed.
Someday I get 8 hints for reviewing some 20ish words. Sometimes I don’t get any. The average is 1 hint for 5 correct words. The most I’ve got is 10 (reviewing the max - 50 entries).
Forced reviews won’t give you any.
Last review of 36 entries gave 7 hints, so the usual average 1 per 5.
I’d be happier if they couldn’t. Then we can imagine it was based on an advanced algorithm based on the difficulty of the words, your previous learning, and other variables. There’s no sophistication in a “review 5 words get 1 hint” rule.
We can hope Memrise has become more ambitious in trying to tailor the experience to individual users, instead of the one-size-fits-all approach, evident in the review algorithm now in use (which is overdue for an upgrade).
Of course, saying it is dependent on various variables is a confirmation as well, and would be nice.
Thanks for the comment Attiker. She was doing reviews, used up her three hints and that was it. I presume you would only get to 100 hints if you never used them! She likes to use them a lot when learning or revising new words. She knows how to study and shouldn’t be treated like a child by saying’ if you do good we’ll give you some more hints to use’!
