[Feature Request] Text To Speech

I have thousands of words in my course for my students to memorize. I used to upload audio files with my own voice for each word but it was such a hassle because of so many words. I wish Memrise had a Text To Speech feature so that it would read aloud the pronunciation automatically. I know Quizlet does this. I would be delighted if Memrise had this feature as well.

As a side note, I want this feature on the smartphone app.

Hi,

You can activate TTS when you use the www.memrise.com web portal with Tampermonkey/Violentmonkey addons in a browser like Google Chrome or Firefox.

This is Cooljingles userscript:

Hi Thomas, thanks for your information. I didn’t know that I could add TTS features to my browser with add-ons. However, I’m not thinking of letting my students use a desktop computer or a laptop because many, I mean MANY, houses don’t have computers. Many Japanese think it is needless because we can do so much with our smartphones.

But thanks anyway.

I understand this.

Sorry, I have not tried to get the Violentmonkey addon running on an Android tablet or my KOPlayer Android emulator.

Olaf told me in another thread that Tampermonkey does not work on a mobile device (e.g tablet) very well as it does not simply hook into Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome but rather installs its own (quite limited) web browser.

Tampermonkey on a (Windows) computer and full Firefox install works differently.

I can imagine having full touch / tapping support to learn a different alphabet or Asia “letters” is a great help in the beginning.
On a computer you have to configure a (switchable by hotkeys) different keyboard layout to make use of other characters (same applies to the Portuguese language with accents/diacritics).

I had a same problem but i found a solution in my Android phone.
you can use Select to Speak service in Accessibility section of your phone.
Follow instructions that i recorded :

I hope this help your students
Good luck

TTS has progressed very far the last years so it’s even tolerable quality-wise now on most computers so this is not a bad idea.

I enjoy tasks with audio. It helps to greatly diversify the learning process, which can become really monotonous on Memrise.

TTS technology has evolved greatly in recent years, so that it can be safely used in learning. I have recently discovered a free service that allows you to download the generated audio as an mp3 that I then can upload in my course. But doing all this work manually requires a lot of time and dedication.

Memrise offers a recording function built on flash, which is an obsolete technology now and is not used in a lot of gadgets. I cannot access this function neither from my tablet nor laptop.

However, most gadgets and computer have TTS API built in their operating systems. If there was an option to use this API to get audio while creating community-courses inside Memrise, all the community and Memrise could benefit from it.
