Different ways to write in romaji

So, the answers for ou and o from levels one to four in Japanese change constantly. When typing in “arigato” and “arigatou”, you literally have to get lucky to know which one it’s asking for. Arigatou is correct, so why is arigato even taught in the beginning? This really needs to be fixed. It’s the same with words like “sayounara” and “sayonara”

Also, Konnichiwa is broken. It thinks the answer is correct until you get to “wa” I’ve gotten it wrong typing every single time because of this bug since this morning and now it thinks I don’t know the word.

The symbols for “ri” change from being what looks like an ear to being disjointed if you switch between the android app and the windows app.

what course are you talking about. please provide a link

It is this one: https://www.memrise.com/course/1179909/japanese-1/

Sorry about that, I’ll put a link in the main post too.

this is an old version of Japanese course. There are new and Improved ones.
if you are using app you need to log out and in again for the app to update courses (of course you need to have updated app)

Ah, thank you. Would you mind sending a link to me for the new version?

no, not at all… now readng your post… you know you have to type in Japanese using IME for example. In the new courses there aren’t any romaji levels for you to type arigatou you only need to type ありがとう

here you are

there are different ways to write with Roman letters. because the う is silent and only means that the preceding vowel is pronounced a little longer.
the actual words are arigato (with the accent in the end) and sayonara (with the accent in the middle)

because there are different ways of romaji it is very important to learn and write in kana and kanji.

there is also Japanese courses forum where this question is discussed more than once

it is not broken. In this case the sound wa is written は not わ. (This happens often when は is in the end of the word)
I think the problem was that you tried to type Japanese words with Roman letters

you can have a look at these threads also

Actually, the problem is that this word (along with a few others) is introduced more than once. First time in Romaji:

Second time in Hiragana:

So you WILL suffer a 50/50 chance of mistyping. Either by typing “ha” when you should type “wa”, or vice versa. Don’t really know if there’s a workaround. But do be fair, I didn’t check that thoroughly.

@RyouBakura

These courses (with the picture of a girl are no longer supported… because of these errors and others more … these courses are visible only for those who have started them before the new ones came out (unlisted now)

Thatś why they made the new one with the same vocabulary (the one I linked somewhere at the beginning of this thread – with the pic of flowers

the workaround would be to refresh app , (if using one ) and restart with the improved ones… or just ignore…

So, as I understand the problem, the Romaji is only used in the first level of the course, sort of as a warm-up or introduction to get you started. Then you learn some Hiragana characters in level 2. Then in level 3, the same words are re-taught using Hiragana.

What you do in this case is when you are ready learn the 3rd level, go back to the first level and ignore the entire level. Writing the words that way was a temporary support.
