[Course Forum] TinyCaterpillar's Courses

Oooh, this is good timing. I was thinking about reading the five 魔女の宅急便 books early next year. Maybe this will have overlapping vocabulary.

Could you change the settings so the kanji is shown the you get the kana answer correct? I think that would help the learning.

After a long delay in my Japanese learning I’ve now started with your small Monster course in parallel with the basics courses I am taking to get a feel for your courses.

Hi, @Marcus.W.

You mean having the kanji pop up to the right of the prompt after answering, like this, right?

The feature should already be present in all of my courses. If not, could you give an example of an item that isn’t displaying it?

I use the app so I’m not sure what it looks like on the web but that looks like the same feature. I’ve only tested the first words in the monsters course but there the kanji does not show up after getting the kana correct like it does on other courses I’ve used.

Hm… I admittedly don’t have much experience with the app. I just had another look at the column options though, and there’s a new “Show after tests” option that I think showed up recently. (I’ve been using the “Always Show” option) I tried enabling those for the Monster World course. Could you please try again and let me know if anything’s changed?

If not, I’ll try playing around with it more when I get some time.

That solved it, thanks.

Glad to hear it. Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll make the same change to the other courses.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions, and I hope you enjoy the course!

New course: Suikoden Vocabulary!

The first entry in another of my favorite RPG series, Suikoden follows the story of a growing revolution in a corrupted empire, as you gather the 108 “Stars of Destiny” to your cause.

This course contains a total of 1,638 words/expressions, split into three ‘acts’, and is being released alongside the game’s screenshots. I have also added screenshots for Shining Force, along with the “Source” tags for its course. Both made for very enjoyable ‘reads’ for me as I gathered vocabulary from them, and I highly recommend them. While Monster World III and Sorcerer’s Kingdom were good for reading practice, Shining Force was the first game in Japanese that I really got invested in, as well as where I finally started to feel that I was beginning to get a grasp on the language.

You can find the download links for both Suikoden and Shining Force’s screenshots in the first post. As always, please feel free to share any feedback.

Oh I remember Suikoden, it’s one of my favourite series of all time. Very unique kind of rpg with it’s gameplay and theme, with a story that thoroughly hooks you. What’s your favourite in order? mine are 2, 5, 3, 1, 4.

Agreed. I’ve actually only played the first two so far, but I recently bought 3 and 4 on PSN, so I’m hoping to give those a go before too long.

I played the heck out of 1 when I was a kid, with many full playthroughs, so it still holds a special place for me, but 2 was just such a masterpiece, it blew 1 out of the water in my eyes.

I’m intrigued to see 3 and 5 above 1 for you. Makes me itch to get to 3.

I’ve been using your Yotsubato Vocabulary course and it’s really great. I really wanted to give you my thanks for all of that work you’ve done and shared. Hopefully I’ll be able to ride the course up to Volume 14 too! (and maybe beyond, in like 4 years)

Thanks, @MyNameIsKir! I’m happy to hear you’re enjoying the course!

My copy of Yotsubato 14 should be coming in the mail soon, so I plan to add levels for that in the near future!

@TinyCaterpillar Would you be interested in making a course for Kancolle or kancolle kai.

Hi, @eieio11490 . I’m unfortunately unable to take requests for courses, since they take such a massive time investment to build, and I already have a fairly large backlog to get through. Sorry. :frowning:

What if I gave you a $20 Amazon giftcard to make that Sōseki course :face_with_monocle:

Haha, tempting, but I’m afraid I’ve still got a ways to go before I even achieve that road map I laid out back in August, so I’m gonna be busy for a while.

That, and there are still so many games and manga series I’m discovering that I want to pick apart for vocab. Haha. I haven’t ruled it out yet, but there’s already a whole lot in the queue for me at the moment.

Oooh, new manga series. Can I ask which one(s)? or is that a proprietary secret?

No problem! :sunglasses:

I plan on doing Cardcaptor Sakura after the two Atelier games, followed by another slice of life series called Flying Witch, which has a bit of a ‘supernatural Yotsubato’ vibe to it. I’ve read the first few Magic Tree House books, too, and I think I’d like to build a course for that at some point as well.

I’ve read a bit of a few other series, but I haven’t decided yet if I’ll be building courses for those. The games I want to get to are accumulating, so I’ll want to return to those before too long. lol

Things will probably be going slow for a while, since I’ve been building courses as I’m ready to learn from them myself (you never know what the future holds for Memrise), and I recently cut my learning pace down from 15 items per day to 5. The daily review counts were starting to get unmanageable.

Those sound tantalizing as always. You’ve really helped a lot with my Japanese, so I’m very grateful!
