Cheers Tim,

Would it be possible to remove the ones with poor audio after rerecording? I have come across some which have several recordings from poor (can barely be heard) to clear. The next time I come across one of these I will post it for you as an example.

Thanks (& Maxine) for all your hard work on this course.

Hi Tim - found quite a few examples but I have been struggling to use the computer over the past few days (router problems but they are fixed now) so I haven’t been making notes :smiley: .

A good example of poor quality audio is in Level 6, - “finir”. The male voice is excellent but the female voice is barely audible. This particular verb matters little as, being a common verb, I am familiar with its pronunciation however, It does make it difficult to do audio exercises. There are other verbs that I am not overly familiar with and, on the audio exercises, you have to keep clicking on the speaker until the other recorded voice comes up.

Hi Kim - This is one of the recordings that was added during the course creation. I agree the level is too low. I will add a better audio soon but as a temporary measure I have removed it. The male voice (which is one I added) is, for now, the only one learners will hear.

Thanks. The male recording is brilliant and is the one I wish I could default to on ALL the verbs where it is available. I really don’t see the necessity to have both a female and a male recording, esp when most of the female ones are inferior in audio quality. I simply want to hear (clearly) how the word is pronounced.

Thanks again for all your work on this and sorry for the late reply !

Hi. I’m an English speaker learning French. I’m currently studying French 3. Like others on this forum I have concerns about the French accents. The course allows answers and corrections without the accents. I think it would be better if the answers required correct accents so students can learn this important aspect of written French as they go.

One other thing I’ve noticed is when clicking on the answer in the Meet The Natives videos, the written section under the video window often displays several characters instead of punctuation, making it more difficult to read.

Other than this I’m really enjoying the courses. :grinning:

Salut !

I don’t take course but I went and did a little and I see what you mean. However, it is not one of the courses @Maxine_Downunder supports. It is an official Memrise staff-created course so you should probably post this in this thread [Course Forum] French 1-7 by Memrise

Also the Meet the Natives videos are only linked to official Memrise courses.

Bonne chance !

BTW Did you know that the French word “pinguoin” refers to the auk - a bird similar in appearance to a penguin but lives in the northern hemisphere and can fly. True flightless penguins (“manchot” in French) only live in the southern hemisphere. I was reading a French article on this very subject only a couple of days ago. Weird coincidence!

Salut!

Thank you for your email. I will post in the appropriate thread. Thanks also for the info about pingouin. It will serve as a reminder for me to never trust those English/French translation books!

Merci beaucoup!

@Maxine_Downunder

Hi again Maxine, I have found another anomaly in “French Verbs”. The translation in Level 7 for “to memorise” is « apprendre par cœur » but it marks the conjoined “œ” in cœur as wrong, forcing you to enter “coeur”. I don’t mind if the latter is accepted as correct but rejecting the former, correct form is just weird and quite annoying.

Sorry to bother you again - is there anything you can do? You would think that the “strict typing” setting would pick it up as incorrect.

Salut,
Kim

Thanks for picking that up. I would have also thought with the “strict typing” that it would call for “œ”. I have just tried to edit it so that “œ” is the correct answer - but have as an alternate “coeur” as being acceptable. What I discovered though that the ligature “œ” is not a choice on the accent bar. I’ll have to sort this out so consider this a work in progress.

@Maxine_Downunder

Thanks Maxine. I also noticed that « œ » is not a choice on the accent bar. If you can’t work it out (which, I’m thinking, you probably won’t be able to) it’s no big issue - I just have to remember it for future reference. It is just weird that the “correct” form is rejected as incorrect.

Cheers

No worries Kim. I’ll hunt around a bit more. I’m sure I’ve seen « œ » on an accent bar on another course. If I can’t work it out I’ll make enquiries elsewhere on the Forum.

@Maxine_Downunder

Cheers Maxine. It is a bit off-putting only because I don’t use the accent bar - I use ALT codes instead as I know them off by heart and find them faster to type.

Merci encore !

PS That was a bit weird using the term “off by heart” there as, coincidentally, the verb where I discovered the ligature wasn’t accepted was “to memorise” - « apprendre par cœur » !

PPS I am sure that I have used that ligature in another course for « un œil ».

Good for you Kim. I should learn them “off by heart” also. For general users it really needs to be on the accent bar though. I also agree with you it being “a bit weird” seeing as that term started this in the first place - LOL.

Hi @Maxine_Downunder,

I think it’s just the case that being a ‘contributor’ (not the ‘creator’) that’s preventing you from simply adding “œ” to the in-browser keyboard. If you tag Joshua or Memrise Matty, I’m sure they would add it for you.

Good luck!

Thanks @alanh, that makes sense. @Joshua and/or @MemriseMatty, can you please add « œ » to the toolbar for this course?

Salut Maxine et Tim !

I don’t know which of you to ask but is there some way of differentiating between répéter ( http://www.memrise.com/course/809/french-verbs/16/?action=next ) and redire ( http://www.memrise.com/course/809/french-verbs/15/?action=next ) as they both are defined as “to repeat” which is very confusing. Perhaps redire could have (not rép…) and, likewise, répéter could have (not red …). I know that one is difficult as they both begin with the same letter.

Oh, and while I am here, I found out quite by accident that epérir (to perish) - http://www.memrise.com/course/809/french-verbs/13/?action=next - is not an actual verb (being listed neither in Larousse or verb conjugation charts and sites such as http://leconjugueur.lefigaro.fr/conjugaison/verbe/ or Bescherelle).

I found this out when I answered périr instead by accident and it was accepted (and is, indeed, the verb “to perish”). On closer inspection of listings in Bescherelle, I found there is not a single verb where a word beginning with an e and followed by a p is not accented with an acute (eg épouser).

However, why both spellings are accepted, I don’t know. Also, I can’t recall the pronunciation as many words have barely audble recordings but I will post a note when it is up for review (but that isn’t for another 5 days).

Sorry for the long post and thanks to both of you for looking after this terrific course.
À plus tard !
Kim

Hello.
I would suggest to translate redire as “to say again”, since “again” is a common meaning of the prefix re-, for instance: refaire “to do again”, relire “to read again”. A hint (like “compound verb” or “one word”) would be necessary because “to say again” can also be dire à nouveau.
Cordialement,
Yves

Thanks Yves. Maybe even:
redire - to repeat, to say again
and
répéter - to repeat, to rehearse.

Hi @ripcurlgirl, thanks for your post which I’ve just read. Good pickup on “répéter” and “redire” - I thought I’d fixed up these types of confusing words. Happy to do so now. I will most likely follow @Yves_Codet advice as he’s the expert. Thanks Yves_Codet. Regarding “epérir”, that was in the course when we took it on, but I’ll consider removing it. Interestingly though, since reading your post I googled it and note that it is recorded as a verb in a number of other Memrise courses. I also found it on Quizlet - but not sure about the veracity of that. Thanks again!

@Maxine_Downunder

Thanks Maxine.

WordReference doen’t list epérir as a valid word either : http://www.wordreference.com/fren/epérir and see here also: http://leconjugueur.lefigaro.fr/conjugaison/verbe/eprir.html

Shame to remove it altogether. though I won’t forget the French verb meaning “to peish” (which can be dépérir also) or the fact that all ep… verbs have an acute accent on the e.
