wynrich, thanks so much for updating this!
@wynrich Lesson 6 is titled āPluralsā but there are no plurals in the lesson, just singular nouns. I wanted to ask the creator why the lesson on plurals does not have plurals and ask if he would correct the lesson and make the nouns plural. Also, none of the lessons on verbs have conjugated verbs or sentences. They all just have the infinitives. Can corrections be made to these lessons? Can you make them?
benton, Iām sorry I didnāt answer your post! Iāve been out of the country (in Italy!) since right after you posted it. It came when I was madly preparing for the trip and Iām sorry I let it slip my mind. Iām back now and almost over jet lag. I agree this lesson is strange. Others, too. E.g., only presenting infinitives for the various verb tenses. Iām not sure what to do. Maybe instead of changing the lesson I could add more relevant lessons? Then people could feel free to ignore the useless lesson? I guess this could be done in a different course. I donāt feel comfortable making massive structural changes since Jeff, the course creator, hasnāt given his blessing for me to make any changes really. (But he seems to be absent.) When I get a chance Iāll think more about this. This is such a useful course, Iād love to make it even more useful. Again, my apologies for being so slow.
@wynrich Thatās ok that youāre just getting back to me now. I hope you enjoyed your vacation. I just found your answer today. Iām still learning how to use the forum. I thought an e-mail would be sent to us when we received answers to our questions, but I did not get one. I love Jeffās course, itās extremely helpful, but I would like to have the verb tenses available so that I can learn them. It would be fine with me if you just added lessons on the verb tenses.
The lack of audio in this course is really unfortunate.
Have the admins considered duplicating the course and giving it to a new maintainer?
I agree! This course is a great start. Here are things that would improve it a lot: (1) add audio, (2) add plurals, (3) add conjugated verbs, (4) add missing words, (5) disambiguate more synonyms. The memrise administrators let me become a contributor and disambiguate some synonyms and then Jeff Hammerbacher, the course owner who had been absent for a long time, objected to anyone else contributing to the course. And now Iāve decided to focus on Spanish only (I canāt seem to keep them both in my head at the same time!) So, Iāve lost motivation to continue with Italian (and this course), at least for now. Perhaps someone else could either manage to get Jeffās blessing to become a contributor or get memriseās permission to be a contributor? Or, as t-hero suggested, clone the course and improve it.
Is there a decent free Italian TTS for recording audios? Iām considering recreating the course myself even if I have to just copy paste the word lists into a spreadsheet.
Iām not sure I understand your question, but forvo.com is great for getting and downloading audio for words and phrases. (PS. Well, I just looked up āTTSā so now I think I understand your question better. Forvo already has recordings but youād have to look up and download each word separately, I believe.)
Forvo always misses a lot of recordings (I tried this with another language) and it often takes forever to get contributors to record new ones. Itās also impractical for 2000 or so words/phrases and also against their licensing to use Forvoās recordings on Memrise.
Yes, it would be very tedious to use Forvo to add recordings for such a huge number of words and like you said, many would be missing. Iām sorry, I donāt have any info about a TTS. (Do you happen to know if there is one for Spanish?)
@t-hero I have created a course with the words from Duolingo, but all the words already covered by Memriseās courses removed. It has sound, but mainly from TTS.
well, forvo has many incorrect pronunciation, but Iāve got my advanced Italian courses to have almost full native audio - you can ask for (new) audio on forvo, but it is indeed a huge work to load and fit the audio (IVe done that work, but Iām ot sure iāll make those courses public again)
Which courses complement this to make it complete?
I have removed all the words that are already included in Memriseās official courses (Italian 1-7). As it does not overlap with these courses you can consider it as the unofficial ā8thā Italian course. The course has 783 words.
Iāve switched over to using your course and the official courses. Much nicer having the audios. One thing Iām finding with the official courses is itās really difficult to learn the words in the same order that Duolingo introduces them.
How did you make this work? Did you work through the official courses before even doing Duolingo?
Iāve always liked the āoverlapā of words. It reinforces words that Iām learning elsewhere and makes me feel good to get some words correct when learning new vocabulary.
Ciao! @wynrich @ilmartello
Thanks for creating this course and maintaining it.
