Class Review has changed?

Hi guys, I came to memrise after a hiatus to start practicing my Swedish again - but the classic review seems to have changed? Rather than allowing me to choose from a list, when I review a word, it almost inevitably gives me the English and an empty word box to type the Swedish into. How is this a review? Obviously I don’t remember what the word is off the top of my head, I’m here to refresh it in my memory! Is there a way to change this so that I don’t see empty boxes to type into, but have multiple choices instead? It’s useless otherwise.

Hi @sciosarah

How long was your break 6-12 months or longer?
How long have you been studying Swedish before? 1-2 years or more?

It is.

The classic review shall test you on RECALLING the words/phrases/sentences in your target language.
The best of course is with not ANY hints (too easy, you can guess!!!) by (exclusive) typing (best is to eliminate this M-C crap).

If you know it by typing, the SR interval will be incremented, if you do not, it will be reset to 4h/12h hours so you have to repeat and review the same word again (there are red and yellow errors).

If you do not install Cooljingle’s “all typing” user script, the exercises between tapping, typing, listening and multiple-choice are mixed…maybe Memrise staff has made another web update.

Then don’t do a classic review  which tests you on your memory (your “forgetting curve” might have hit you or not).

I also won’t want to advise the crappy web portal “Speed review” (Android app might work better with the increasing red bar, but the timer generally is b…s…t).

"Overdueness reviews out of any SR intervals are not that simple, especially after a longer break with ZERO contact of the language on other learning portals; and “speed reviews” (=multiple choice) with timer are your enemy!

  1. You can press the “Show Answer” button which does not mark the question as wrong (does not reset the SR interval according to other users)
  1. You can hit the ESC button to show the “Answer”.

  2. You can use the course level Preview function to click through all words in the presentation / learning screen without testing you on your RECALLING ability.

  3. If you feel that you know absolutely nothing, the best would be IMHO to reset your course and re-learn all words from scratch (6 planting steps).

If you know some, it would be cool to increment the SR interval for those words, wouldn’t it?

Force multiple-choice: How can I set a course - that I did not create - to "no typing"? - #5 by Thomas.Heiss

Side note:
This will not work well for a (longer) hiatus and “Overdueness” reviews where you are pretty weak on!

You shall not to be allowed to increment the SR interval to the next number, when you do not know the word well by recalling, but instead you are reviewing old words or - and this is more of my opinion - you are pretty much trying to guess them.

Depending on the interval (e.g 90 days, 180 days) you create false-positives and you will not see the word a longer time when you mark it as OK.

In your case the best would probably be to RESET the review interval for many/all words to 4-12h or 1day once you have used the preview button.

You would have to be very careful using multiple-choice in your case and I think you probably have to choose the wrong answer more often than trying to guess the word, which you obviously can’t recall well, to avoid incrementing the next SR interval.

“Overdueness” reviews IMHO just make fun when you are still strong (course backlog queue is high because of missing reviews) and you do still know many words well so you can test yourself on those other words/phrases accepting your errors and seeing them again in 4h/12h (resetted spaced repetition interval).

I would be interested in hearing other opinions from forum members.

How do you personally review completed courses with a high backlog which you have not touched for weeks / months?

Best regards / Viele Grüße

Uh, I appreciate the lengthy response, but this is basically just a condescending attack on my preferred method of learning. Just because one mode works for you, doesn’t mean it works for everyone else. I have been on at least a 6 month hiatus, but I can already read basic Swedish. I have been keeping up with it by ordering and reading Språk Tidningen, a Swedish language journal. I come to Memrise to improve my vocabulary and make reading easier.

Re-setting the course is probably exactly what I need to do, so I will. As for “multiple choice crap” it has worked for me for years. Thanks anyway.
