Cannot post in course forums

When I go to “forum” within a course, there is no button to create a new topic and i can’t post in an existing topic either! I am using windows/firefox. Is this a known bug or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for helping.

see this thread

As far as I know, you should still be able to post for all of June.

I have just checked on several courses, and I still can.

Is your computer or Firefox updating? Anything else going on?

Try restarting your computer, log out and log in etc.

I am using Windows 10 & Firefox too.

@Hydroptere, can you not post new threads?

I can still post too. If I had to hazard a guess I’d say it’s been disallowed for you when you registered since you are a very new user and Memrise plans to delete those forums. It could also be a browser issue, so try switching browsers.

You can also just post the content of the post you want to post here and one of us can post it, if you also give us the link to the course. At the same time reminding the course creator to start a thread here.

And I forgot to mention in your other topic, you can look through the list here and see if the course is among them: Topics tagged course-forum

Edit: sorry, mistaken you for this user:

I have just started the Cebuano course (http://www.memrise.com/course/410676/cebuano-6/). I actually updated my account to a paid version because the description on this course says it is supposed to have “added audio”.

I didn’t see or hear any audio so that is why I upgraded, thinking that was the reason I was not finding any audio. I still do not hear any audio. When I click on the forum link it just says “No one has posted in this forum yet.” and there is no button or link to create a new topic. WTH? I just want to ask the creator of this course how to access the audio.

What am I missing?

Thank you!

Aren’t you seeing this when you click on the course forum button?

I’m not seeing it. This is what I see.

That’s strange. I’ve just looked again and am still seeing the button. Maybe it’s a browser thing. I’m using Chrome.

Yep, me too.

Version 51.0.2704.84

All up to date on a Macbook.

@Joshua or @Lien - Could someone on the technical side please take a look at this apparent bug? Thanks!

@twooten You need around 50,000+ points to be able to start a thread. Your not that far off, little bit more learning and you’ll be able to create one.

Sadly there’s no audio in that course, what a bummer! You might want to find a different course instead.

@Joshua - I didn’t know about that 50,000 point requirement and I doubt many other users do. It wasn’t mentioned anywhere in relation to the old (ie existing) course forums, was it?

@alanh I didn’t know as well. However, I believe this is to prevent spamming on the forum.

@Joshua - Thanks. That would make sense.

Thanks, Joshua and Alanh for looking at this and letting me know about the points thing. Hey, I completely understand you guys are not the ones calling the shots or doing the actual programming here so don’t think this is directed towards you.

I’d like to just say that I’m less than pleased with Memrise. I purchased the pro plan, as stated above, primarily because the course I was looking at said in the description that there was audio. In order to learn a language you really do need to hear the words spoken so you’ll know the correct pronunciation.

My two issues with Memrise are as follows:

  1. If I spend money on a site like this, I would expect to be able to post on the course forum without having to accumulate some arbitrary number of points. How does one accumulate these points? I did a bit of googling and found this:

So it looks like basically I need to use the system, study the course, “planting / watering”, whatever in order to get the points I need that would allow me to post a question to the course author. So I’m going to spend a few days going through the process, learning these words, putting potentially incorrect pronunciation into my memory so that I can then have the points I need to ask the author how to access the audio. Then I would find out that no, there actually is no audio.

Does this strike anyone else as ridiculous?

  1. Memrise should put some sort of check in place that would enforce a correct description on course pages. Memrise should not allow someone to post a course saying that there is audio in the course if that is not the case. I understand that these things happen and if I were not paying money… I’d probably just not say anything about it. But since I am (was) paying money, I would expect the course description to more closely describe the actual contents of the course.

This is not a very good spam deterrent. If a spammer knows that all they need to do is get 50,000 points before they can begin spamming, they’ll just either sit there and click sh*t until they reach the 50k, or they’ll hire some kid in India for 50 cents a day to do it for them. A better option would be to simply add a link next to the “like”, “share”, and “bookmark” items that is a “report as spam” link.

Anyway, it’s back to Anki for me

Memrise has its problems, but here it’s your own ignorance that is holding you back. Had you asked your questions without the wrong starting assumptions you would have perhaps received a quick reply.

Audio is not a pro feature. And if the course doesn’t have audio, having a pro subscription won’t help you. And contacting the course creator through the forum also won’t help you; if they had wanted to add audio they already would have done so.

What you should have done is not stop at the first course you found, but browse some more courses to see if they had audio.

No. That’s a wrong assumption. You could have asked here, and you would have received a very quick reply because this is a very simple question.

A while back some spammers posted thousands of posts in obscure places all over the forum. The restriction was put in place after that. That restriction was not advertised.

Good luck with Anki. It’s arguably better in a lot of ways. Memrise is an alternative that behaves differently in some ways.

And if the course doesn’t have audio, having a pro subscription won’t help you.

That’s genius, thank you.

And contacting the course creator through the forum also won’t help you; if they had wanted to add audio they already would have done so.

The fact is, the description says that it includes audio. I would simply like to ask the course creator about it, if they intend to add audio in the future, or if there is some other way I can get that.

You could have asked here, and you would have received a very quick reply because this is a very simple question.

That’s odd. Why in the world would I come here to ask someone a question about a course when right there at the top of the course page is a link to a forum? It seems like that would have been the obvious place to ask. Otherwise, what exactly is the purpose of that forum?

Good luck with Anki

Thanks! I’ve had pretty good luck with it in the past while studying Thai and Vietnamese. Just thought I’d try a different route this time around.

@Joshua - Do this 50,000 points have to be in that particular course or in total?

@colibris79 You’ll need to have a rank of memcache or higher, which is 50,000 points in total.

I can reply but also don’t see how to post a new comment.
