Adding words to underlying database?

Hello!
Hello there!

I have created a course in order to list new Dutch words I come across
and test myself on them. I have added lots of words by simply typing in
the word in Dutch or English and selecting the right word that pops up in the drop down menu. However sometimes a word does not appear as an option, as if it is not present
in the underlying database. Some of these words are not especially complicated. How do I add words to the underlying Dutch database so that I can add the word to my Dutch course?

Thank you,

Tess

Hi @tmartin84,

By typing the Dutch and English words in the relevant boxes and then clicking on the blue “+” symbol should add the item to your course.

Just a couple of questions:

Are you following the course creation guidance in the “FAQ” area?

Have you added a second “Level” to your course, in order to expose the “Database” button?

Come back if you need any help.

Good luck with your course!

Hi alanh,

Yes, when I type in an English or Dutch word in the field, options pop up in a pop up menu, and I select one of them by clicking the + sign, and adding it to my course. The problem is often no options pop up in the pop up menu so I unable to select anything, and therefore cannot add that word to my course. For example, the Dutch word ‘zelden’ means seldom. I type this in and nothing pops up, so I can’t add this to my course.

I added a level, and am now looking at the ‘Databases’ tab, but it just seems to be my own database, the words I have selected for my course - I am looking for a way to actually add words to the underlying database, so I am select these words for my own course. Or perhaps you know of another way to accomplish this?

Thanks,
Tess

Hi again Tess,

What happens if you type “zelden” in the box in the Dutch column and “seldom” in the English one, then click on the “+”? That entry should then be accepted, even if the database doesn’t offer you anything to select from.

I’ll come back on the other point.

Hi again,

I think the bug mentioned in this thread: New to memrise, unrelated auto-suggestions when adding words! Pls help is affecting things.

I have just tried adding words to one of my courses and It’s either offering me bizarre suggestions to choose from or “no results found”.

They’re working on a fix but, in the meantime, you should be able to add entries to your course by typing in the Dutch and English words (where you already know both, of course!).

If you’ve got a lot to enter, the spreadsheet method is best:

Let’s hope the fix isn’t long in arriving!

Ah, that’s it! Sorry, it was so simple. I didn’t realize that you could type in both languages and click the + button and it would add it. I assumed you had to pick something from the drop-down menu, which were entries that were somehow pre-vetted.

Thanks for your help!
